Overview of 2011 LA Forum Programming:

2011 was a diverse year with a mixture of two summer exhibitions, showcasing new park design in Los Angeles and the award-winning New York firm LTL Architects; our summer series On the Map, which annually opens the doors to hard to see new buildings in Los Angeles; our Fall lecture series Out There Doing It, which gives a platform to emerging design practices; and many other activities.

EXHIBITION
New Park Design in Los Angeles

Within the past five years many important parks have been designed for a wide variety of areas within the Los Angeles Basin. Yet there has been little discussion about these parks: what they look like, how they function, and how they relate to contemporary Los Angeles. This exhibition will survey six major parks that are currently being designed, that are in construction, or have been completed recently.

EXHIBITION
LTL – 4 Projects :  4 Scales

This exhibit comprised of four recent project by the New York based firm Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis Architects (LTL). The projects range from 69 million to 108 square feet, yet each is predicated on a strategy of optimistic opportunism, whereby experiments and inventions are teased out of the very constraints of each project. This site specific installation foregrounds the productive roll of drawing in LTL’s work, turning the walls and floor into etched and printed surfaces.

PECHA KUCHA
Femmes Fatales V

This was our fifth annual Femmes Fatale. These outstanding female practitioners explore, evaluate, and impact the development of architecture and design in Los Angeles. This PK brought together an interdisciplinary lineup of creative professionals who work with the physical enviroment and the community as a focus of their practice.

SERIES
On the Map 2011: Varying Degrees

This series opened the doors to some of the newest and most exciting projects by John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects, Frederick Fisher and Partners, Morphosis, Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis Architects and others, highlighting the contributions that higher education is making to our city.

SERIES
Out There Doing It 2011

Through interrogating and encouraging these conversations, the LA Forum hoped to offer a greater understanding of how architecture is produced, assembled, and disseminated in the contemporary cultural milieu. Architects today co-conspire with a host of key figures in a fluid exchange of imagination spanning from pre-design to post-occupancy. Whether privately volleyed or publicly launched, these dynamic, ad-hoc, and non-linear exchanges provide the fuel that drives design and makes innovation possible.
