ON THE MAP 2011 – Varying Degrees: Recent Projects in Higher Education
Higher education plays a major role in this country’s development and economic recovery. Around Los Angeles, academic institutions such a Caltech, UCLA, USC, and the Claremont Colleges have undertaken large-scale campaigns promoting new construction and renovation across their campuses, and producing a new crop of spectacular projects.
The 2011 ON THE MAP series will open the doors to some of these new exciting projects by John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects, Frederick Fisher and Partners, Morphosis, Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis Architects and others, highlighting the contributions that higher education is making to our city.
Thursday, 6.30.11, 7:30pm: Graduate Aerospace Laboratories at the California Institute of Technology (GALCIT)

We open the ON THE MAP series this year in Pasadena to visit Caltech’s historic campus and a building that has accomplished some of the most revolutionary breakthroughs in the history of aeronautics. This 33,000 square foot renovation by John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects (JFAK) of the department’s laboratories, conference rooms, and common spaces acknowledges these past achievements while also suggesting the multitude of exciting directions for its future.
Thursday, 7.28.11, 7:00pm: Caltech IST by Frederick Fisher and Partners
On July 28th, 2011 we will be visiting Caltech for a tour of the Walter and Leonore Annenberg Center for Information Science and Technology (IST) led by Joseph Coriaty, AIA (Partner-in-Charge, Frederick Fisher and Partners).This new 46,000sf facility which has already received numerous awards and a LEED Gold rating, aims to foster collaboration, academic transparency, research and teaching intrinsic to this new academic discipline. Working within the historic Caltech campus, FFP used the Modern idiom of steel and colored glass to both honor and advance the campus.

Join the Forum on August 11, 2011 for the third site visit of the Varying Degrees Series. We will again be visiting Caltech for a tour of the Cahill Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Caltech by Morphosis Architects.

New Claremont University Consortium Administrative Center by Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis Architects
This new administrative center for the Claremont University Consortium consolidates into a single location the majority of CUC departments and services currently dispersed across campus. Through the adaptive reuse of an existing but under-utilized maintenance building, the new administrative center allows CUC to create a unique work environment with a well-defined public character, all in environmentally sensitive and creative manner.
