John Chase Memorial Fund 2012 Winner
Announcing the 2012 John Chase Memorial Fund recipient, Duc Le and his winning proposal for a happening on Park(ing) Day. A Masters of Science Architecture candidate at the Woodbury School of Architecture, Mr. Le’s thesis focuses on the local community as a vehicle to address the nature of private space versus open space in our urban centers. With partial support from the JCMF, Le will realize the physical nature of his thesis through the fabrication and installation of a pop-up urban armature to be enjoyed by all on Park(ing) Day LA. Come celebrate informal urbanism!
Park(ing) Day, Los Angeles: the Sun-Bedazzler
Opening: Friday, September 21, 2012, All day
7386 Beverly Boulevard, Los Angeles
Corner of Beverly Boulevard and Martel Avenue
The Sun-Bedazzler, Duc Le’s Park(ing) Day installation, reimagines the parking spot as a sun-drenched oasis. By swapping out asphalt for decking and canopies, Le introduces sunbathing, commerce, and miniature golf into West Hollywood. In the newfound tradition of parklets—the micro parks that incrementally take back the street for leisure—the temporary Sun-Bedazzler reprograms surface parking through the introduction of architecture as an extension of surface. The bold design makes the case for a small, incremental approach that has big, long-lasting impact on the built environment. Come bask in the Sun-Bedazzler, just make sure to wear your shades.
The Sun-Bedazzler pops up in a metered parking space next to l.a. Eyeworks at 7386 Beverly Boulevard, the iconic store designed by architect Neil Denari. The legendary eyeware retailer has a long history of supporting cutting-edge art and architecture and they have generously offered a spot on Martel Avenue for Le’s installation.
Park(ing) Day is an annual, global event in which citizens, artists, and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into Park(ing) spaces or temporary public places. The all-day Sun-Bedazzler event is packed with activity, including a pop-up coffee stand by Cognoscenti Coffee
and a more formal presentation by Le on his design and thesis research.
