On The Map 2013: El Segundo Museum of Art

Join the LA Forum for the 4th site visit of the 2013 On The Map Series ‘South of the Ten’ as we visit the El Segundo Museum of Art on Thursday, August 22nd.  El Segundo Museum of Art (ESMoA) is a private, non-profit art laboratory located in a new ground-up building in downtown El Segundo that is expanding the landscape of LA’s art scene, both geographically, and through innovative programming. In addition to providing a publicly accessible exhibition space for the owners’ collection and for traveling exhibits, the ESMoA building also includes a multi-level residential unit connected to the gallery and to the roof-terrace for their on-going artist-in-residence program. Both the mission and the physical architecture of the museum raise provocative questions about the role of private institutions in filling the gaps in arts-education today, as well as tactics for how the arts can be used to help catalyze development and place-making within the LA metropolis.
