Today, contemporary school designers face a crisis. Hamstrung by dwindling funding and overreaching guidelines, practitioners too often forfeit innovation and impact to satisfy accelerated schedules and impossible budgets, leaving in their wake a string of missed opportunities and underwhelming environments.  This dire trajectory follows recent trends in hospital and prison design as it threatens to sacrifice yet another architectural typology at the altar of short-sited bureaucracy.

The L.A. Forum aims to head off a trifecta of architectural inefficacy as we head BACK TO SCHOOL.  On the Map 2008 features a collection of innovative educational facilities that resolutely buck those trends.  These four schools demonstrate the fundamental value of thoughtful design to the development of energetic classrooms, effective curricula, and engaged communities.  In addition, noted architects, critics, and educators will be on hand to facilitate vigorous debate on the state of contemporary school design.

We need to ask more questions, so please raise your hand.
